The main source of this infestation is Curley and his wife. These two characters, specifically make life hard for their coworkers. Their violent outbursts and troubled personalities make them the perfect couple. However, for the others, this makes life on the farm substantially harder. Curley, a cruel character who causes trouble for everyone on the farm, makes life miserable for his fellow workers by frustrating himself and others, and by being overwhelmingly selfish.
This crude man is specifically frustrated because he is not shown the respect he thinks he deserves. She does this because she bases her self worth on what others think, but others do not think highly of her. Despite having a husband, she flirts with every man on the farm. Along with being egotistical, she is also an irritable woman who is bitter because her dreams of being a movie star were shattered by her repressive mother. Being on a secluded farm with an overprotective and violent husband is her worst nightmare. She craves the spotlight and attention, but nobody will dare speak to her in fear of her husband.
Without people telling her how perfect she is, she becomes violent and threatens people, specifically Crooks. She threatens him with lynching because he is the only Negro on the farm. Curley's wife is slowly going insane from the isolation that the farm brings.
She acts out because of the way others have treated her. Nonetheless, she is still a selfish and frustrated. Show More. Steinbeck explains that she is not a person, she is just a symbol. She has no function, except to be a foil — and a danger to Lennie. This story was about Dimitrich Gomov, who met a woman named Anna Sergeyevna. Both of them were lonely, bored, and unsatisfied. She was just out of place on the ranch, and because of that, must have been a really lonely person with lonely feelings.
There is no evidence of her living up to all of the reputation in the novel. She also cannot talk to any of the ranch workers, as it is deemed unacceptable by society for a married woman to be conversing freely with men, and especially not flirting with them. Curley literally keeps a glove full of Vaseline, in order to keep his hand soft, possibly for a sexual act. This makes the audience believe that Curley knows his wife is capable of anything, and that he would rather have her under his control.
In Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men women are portrayed as discriminated. At the time of the novel, women were thought of as inhuman and they where just there to serve the men. THe character 'Curley's Wife' in the novel of mice and men is a victim of this. She is married to Curley who neglects her and because of her loneliness she is always seeking attention. The play itself is generally sexist and reflects the common notions on women during that time period.
